New York — 12 March 2026
On the margins of the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (#CSW70) in New York, Shamsama hosted a joint side event bringing together experts, advocates, and international partners. The event was co-sponsored by the Permanent Missions of Finland, Luxembourg, Canada, Spain, Australia, Ireland, and Greece to discuss the evolving situation of women and girls in Afghanistan and the importance of sustained international attention.

The discussion focused on the multiple and ongoing challenges faced by Afghan women and girls across private, public, and institutional spheres. Participants noted that these challenges are shaped by a range of intersecting factors, including ethnicity, religion, geography, poverty, and social status, which often deepen existing inequalities and limit access to opportunities and protection.
The event highlighted that understanding these complex and interconnected realities is essential for developing informed and effective international responses. Participants emphasized the need for approaches that are inclusive, context-sensitive, and attentive to the diverse experiences of Afghan women and girls.

We also underscored the importance of continued dialogue, engagement, and collaboration among international partners, civil society, and Afghan women leaders to ensure that their perspectives and priorities remain central to global discussions and policy responses.
Shamsama reaffirmed its commitment to supporting platforms that amplify the voices of Afghan women and promote greater awareness of the challenges they face, while encouraging thoughtful and coordinated international efforts to address these issues.
